Richmond Kajaks once again stood tall at the recent B.C. Cross-Country Championships in Abbotsford.

In another stellar performance that has long typified one of Canada’s elite track and field clubs, local athletes made their mark at the provincial meet.

Alix Boogemans was the first finisher among nine-year-old girls in the 1.5 kilometre event, while four senior runners were equally impressive in their respective events. Rachel Maika won the senior women’s eight-kilometre race; Fred Pawluk topped the mens’ 70-74 division; and George Agnew placed second in the men’s 75-79 category.

Among the older participants at the championships, the ever-youthful Agnew, 79, was pleased with the result.

“I like to stay fit, and still have the drive to compete,” he said.

With her result, Maika qualified for the nationals Nov. 25 in Kingston, Ontario.
